Disney princesses have a sort of line of being virginal, untouched blossoms, even the more recent ones. Meg’s story, as far as we know, is the only one where she has fallen in love before and true love didn’t work out, even when she paid the ultimate sacrifice. Meg’s reluctance to fall in love feels like a show of ‘not gonna, men are pigs’. This girl is the slave of the master of the underworld because her previous relationship didn’t work out. Meg was the girl who would be the princesses if they didn’t win, and she still lands her wonderboy.
